PROFILE
Ellynne Plotnick Jazz Vocalist
BIO |  GALLERY

Ellynne Plotnick is a fresh emerging talent in jazz. A self-styled vocalist, she blends the classic with the experimental and the unexpected. She is as likely to perform a John Coltrane medley as she is to sing something out of the great American song book. In performance, Ellynne exudes an aura of sweetness and vulnerability. Her voice has a raw beauty and an astonishing variety of tonal color.

Soulful and creative, Ellynne delves into the world of musical story-telling unafraid to play with form, meter, and harmony. Her self-produced debut album, Daydream, is an uncharacteristically straight collection of standards, yet she throws in the Wayne Shorter composition "Virgo," (with a lyric written by Susan Winder) — not the usual song choice for a vocalist. Her sound on this album is reminiscent of early Chris Connor, (a singer Ellynne has more than once been compared to). On this recording, you can hear the lovely vocal qualities that she has cultivated come through.

Since childhood, Ellynne has gravitated towards jazz music. As a toddler she heard Bird, Diz, Getz, and Jobim, on her parents' stereo, and fell head over heels. She remembers the joy she felt upon hearing grown men, beboppers, sing the phrase: "Salt Peanuts, Salt Peanuts . . . " She was also exposed to copious amounts of the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, and other seminal rock, punk, and folk groups, all of whom have influenced her musical development to one degree or another.

In the mid-90's, Ellynne started an alternative rock / pop band called NLB. They played all original music, performing in the New York area for a couple of years. More enamored by the sound of jazz, however, Ellynne began to study voice and jazz harmony with Susan Winder (through Mannes School of Music), attended the Jazzmobile program in Harlem, and has been steadily schooling herself on jazz singing / song interpretation with some of the best teachers and performers in the field, including: Jay Clayton, Sheila Jordan, and Mark Murphy, among others.

She has attended workshops and master classes with Dr. Barry Harris in New York City and in the Netherlands. As a member of his jazz chorus, Ellynne has performed at New York City's Birdland, The Village Vanguard, Symphony Space, and Town Hall.

A native of Connecticut, Ellynne has lived in Europe, Japan, Seattle, and New York City. She currently resides in Stamford, Connecticut, where she performs and teaches, and continues to grow and evolve as an artist. Her aim is to be better today than yesterday, and better tomorrow still.
